Convenient as it may be, putting your phone on charge and sleeping next to it overnight to juice it up may pose some serious threats to your well-being. So, if you’re someone who likes charging your phone overnight, you may want to give it some serious thought. Tech giant Apple has issued a rather grim warning to this effect. In a service announcement, Apple warned its users about the potential dangers of sleeping next to their charging phones.
These threats could include a fire outbreak, electric shock, injuries, and even death, in some cases. The company has warned against operating a phone when it is connected to a power source. Apple advises users to maintain proper charging protocol, and only charge devices in a well-ventilated area to avoid any repercussions due to less than adequate airflow.
For many of us, charging phones overnight is extremely convenient. You wake up to a fully juiced-up phone; ridding you of last-minute struggles to get your devices powered up. That’s even more true with Apple iPhones since the charging wattages are quite low compared to the competition, so they usually take much longer to charge completely. However, Apple strongly advises against this practice.
The warning states, “Don’t sleep on a device, power adapter, or wireless charger, or place them under a blanket, pillow, or your body, when it’s connected to a power source. Keep your iPhone, the power adapter, and any wireless charger in a well-ventilated area when in use or charging.” Apple warned that this could result in “fire, electric shock, injury, or damage to iPhone or other property”.
Furthermore, they also stressed the risk of using third-party chargers to power their iPhones. Apple states that cheaper chargers may not come equipped with the same safety standards as Apple’s own charging cables and adapters. If you are to go with a third-party charger, Apple urges its customers to look for “Made for iPhone” cables that comply with certain international safety standards.
Apple said, “You can also charge iPhone with 'Made for iPhone' or other third-party cables and power adapters that are compliant with USB 2.0 or later and with applicable country regulations and international and regional safety standards. Other adapters may not meet applicable safety standards, and charging with such adapters could pose a risk of death or injury."
The company also issued a warning against charging your device near any water or other liquid or charging with damaged cables as these could cause “fire, electric shock, injury, or damage to iPhone or other property” as well.
Keeping Apple’s PSA in mind, there are also other benefits to keeping your phone away from yourself when you’re sleeping, as the blue light emitted from smartphones can disrupt your body’s circadian rhythm by inhibiting melatonin (a hormone that promotes sleep). If you have to use your phone, we recommend putting on Night Mode (which is available on certain phones) that limits blue light and also turns on DND for certain notifications.
