Instagrams video selfie feature launches to prevent spam

Bots are a real problem in Instagram, with many celebrity accounts using them to boost their follower counts and increase revenue potential. In order to combat this issue, Instagram is now introducing a new feature known as the Video Selfie, which will require users to take a short video selfie in order to prove that they are real people. Meta has already made promises that it won’t use the feature to collect biometric data. Let’s just hope that they didn’t have their fingers crossed behind their backs!

How does the new Instagram Video Selfie work?

As a part of the verification process, Instagram is asking users to turn their heads in different directions so that all parts of the face can be captured. The exact caption detailing the process reads “We need a short video of turning your head in different directions. This helps us confirm that you're a real person and confirm your identity".

After taking the video, users need to submit the same to Meta, who will then confirm the user’s identity. The company claims that the videos will not be shared on Instagram (which should be an incentive for people don’t share their faces to also verify their identity), and will be deleted from their servers within 30 days, but who really knows, right? Meta says that this data will not be used for facial recognition or any other purposes.

However, with the Metaverse currently underway, such video selfies can be a great tool to ensure the safety of other users. After all, if you’re just an untraceable avatar on the internet, you can practically get away with anything. With hate language and fake news being a very real threat to international cooperation and democracy, it is essential to be able to verify each and every user on the platform.
